Stump grinding is usually priced separately from tree removal, so many homeowners end up with a stump and a second quote. The good news is that stump grinding is one of the more predictable tree services to price. The main drivers are stump diameter, the number of stumps, access, and how deep and how clean you want the result.

What changes the price
- Diameter. Measured across the top of the stump. Bigger stumps take longer.
- Number of stumps. The first stump carries the setup cost; additional stumps are often cheaper each.
- Species and condition. Dense hardwoods such as oak take longer than softwoods; old, partly rotted stumps can be quicker.
- Access. Narrow gates, steps, steep slopes and retaining walls may limit which grinder fits. Measure the narrowest gate on the route.
- Depth. A shallow grind is fine for sod. Replanting a tree in the same spot or pouring a slab calls for a deeper grind and removing chips.
- Surface roots. Grinding roots radiating from the stump adds time.
- Cleanup. Leaving chips in the hole is cheapest; hauling them and backfilling with soil costs more.
Before grinding: utilities
Grinding goes below grade, so buried utilities should be marked first. In Virginia, the 811 system handles locate requests; your contractor usually places the request. Tell the crew about irrigation lines, invisible pet fences and lighting cables, which 811 does not mark.
After grinding
Chips settle and decompose over time, so a ground-out hole often sinks a little. For lawn, remove most chips, fill with topsoil, and seed or sod. Mushrooms sometimes appear as buried roots decay; they are usually harmless.
Grind or leave it?
Stumps on steep slopes, especially near water, can help hold soil, and leaving them is sometimes the better choice. On Smith Mountain Lake shoreline lots, check Appalachian Power's shoreline rules before disturbing anything within the project boundary; see our Smith Mountain Lake page.

Questions to ask before booking
- Is the price per stump, per inch, or a flat rate for the job?
- How deep will you grind, and will you grind surface roots?
- Are chips left, spread, or hauled away?
- Will you request utility marking?
- Is there a minimum charge?
Estimating your own stumps
Measure each stump's diameter at ground level across the widest point, including any root flare that rises above grade. Count the stumps and note whether a grinder can reach them through a gate (many machines need roughly a standard gate width or more). Photos plus measurements usually get you a firm quote without a visit.
Grinding vs. leaving the stump
Leaving a stump costs nothing now, but stumps can sprout, attract wood-boring insects and get in the way of mowing. Grinding is usually a small share of the overall removal cost when done at the same time.
Worked examples using Angi's per-inch pricing
Angi gives $2 to $5 per inch of diameter with minimum charges around $100. Applied to sample stumps (arithmetic only, not quotes):
| Stump diameter | At $2/inch | At $5/inch |
|---|---|---|
| 12 in | $24, so the ~$100 minimum likely applies | $60, minimum likely applies |
| 24 in | $48, minimum likely applies | $120 |
| 36 in | $72, minimum likely applies | $180 |
| 48 in | $96 | $240 |
Real quotes add access, root flare, hauling and travel. That is why Angi's typical job sits around $250 even though per-inch math looks lower.
What raises or lowers the price
- Higher: hard-to-reach backyards, steep slopes, large surface roots, rocky soil, deep grinding for replanting, hauling grindings.
- Lower: several stumps in one visit, open access, keeping grindings as mulch, scheduling in the off-season (Angi notes winter can be cheapest).
DIY rental vs. hiring
Rental grinders are heavy, throw debris, and require utility marking first (Virginia 811 is free). For one or two small stumps with good access, a confident DIYer may manage; for large hardwood stumps, a pro machine is much faster.
Stump grinding cost FAQ notes
Is grinding included with removal?
Often it is quoted as a separate line. Ask, because "removal" alone usually means the stump stays.
Does a bigger stump cost more?
Yes; diameter is the main factor in per-inch pricing, and large root flares add time.
Is it cheaper to grind several stumps?
Usually, because the minimum charge and travel are spread over more work.
Preparing for the grinder
- Have Virginia 811 mark buried utilities (free).
- Flag private lines: irrigation, low-voltage lighting, invisible pet fences.
- Clear rocks, edging and decorations around the stump.
- Measure the narrowest gate on the route.
- Decide whether grindings stay or go.
Sprouting stumps
Some species send up sprouts from roots after the stump is ground. Cut or mow sprouts as they appear; they weaken and stop over time.
Stumps vs. replanting
If you plan to plant a new tree near the old spot, ask for deeper grinding and remove most of the grindings, which can tie up nitrogen as they decompose. Plant a little off the old center where possible.
Utility marking is free, but plan the timing
Virginia 811 must be contacted at least three working days before digging or stump grinding; working days exclude weekends and legal holidays.
Private lines such as irrigation and lighting are not marked by 811, so flag them yourself before the grinder arrives.

Common questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
Angi reports a typical single stump around $250 in 2026, with large stumps up to $1,600 and many companies charging a minimum around $100.
Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?
Generally yes. Angi notes the first stump carries a minimum callout fee and additional stumps are often priced lower.
How deep is a stump ground?
Depth varies. Ask for the depth in writing; deeper grinding is needed for replanting or hardscape.
