Roanoke Tree Removal is a local referral service: we pass your request to an independent, local tree crew. We are not a government office, plant pathologist or insurer, and this page is general information, not a diagnosis.
What oak wilt is
UW Extension's oak wilt page says the disease is caused by Bretziella fagacearum and can kill virtually all oak species, with the red oak group (pointed leaf lobes such as red, scarlet, black and northern pin) most susceptible, and the white oak group (rounded lobes such as white, bur, post and swamp white) less so. Minnesota Extension uses the same fungus name and the same red-versus-white contrast. Many other problems, including drought and root damage, can look similar, so lab confirmation matters before a large removal plan.
This guide goes deeper on wilt biology and timing than our broader ash and oak tree problems page, which also covers emerald ash borer.
Symptoms to watch for
| Group | What Extension sources describe | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Red oak group | UW: can die in less than one month; UMN: complete wilting and death can occur in as little as four weeks from branch infection; leaves often brown from the edges with green centers | Fast failure; nearby red oaks at higher graft risk |
| White oak group | UW: less severe symptoms, rarely die in a single season; UMN: decline may take 2 to 5 years or longer | Slower timeline; still a neighbor risk through grafts |
| Shared leaf clues | Marginal bronzing or tanning; wilting from tips or outer margins; leaves droop, curl or drop; crown symptoms often start high | Pattern plus lab testing beats a single brown branch |
| Spread clues | Beetles visit fresh wounds; fungus mats under bark on some red oaks; root grafts between nearby oaks | Pruning timing and root cutting plans both matter |
UW and Minnesota Extension descriptions are national disease references. Confirming oak wilt still needs a diagnostic lab or an experienced arborist's sampling plan.
How the fungus spreads
UW Extension explains two paths. Sap beetles pick up spores from fungal mats in infected trees and carry them to healthy oaks that were recently wounded by storms or pruning; oak bark beetles can also move the fungus. Once a tree is infected, natural root grafts between nearby oaks let the fungus travel underground. Minnesota Extension adds that root grafting depends on species, tree size, soil and terrain, and that most urban study spread happened within about 30 feet, with some cases out to about 50 feet.
When not to prune oaks in Virginia
Piedmont Master Gardeners, citing Virginia Cooperative Extension, say November and December are the preferred months to prune oaks in Virginia, and to avoid pruning from March through August. If an oak must be cut in spring or summer for storm damage or safety, that guidance says to seal the wound with tree wound dressing or latex-based paint. Minnesota Extension's Midwestern risk table marks April through July as high risk for insect spread and tells readers not to wound, prune or fell oaks in oak-wilt-prone counties in that window unless a wound is sealed immediately. Virginia's published homeowner guidance uses the wider March through August avoid window above.
For the broader dormant-season calendar, see Virginia tree pruning calendar.
What to do if you suspect oak wilt
- Do not prune on a hunch in the high-risk months.Wait for dormant season when you can, or seal unavoidable storm wounds right away.
- Get a diagnosis.UW and Minnesota Extension both warn that similar symptoms have other causes. Ask an arborist about sampling.
- Think about neighbors.Root grafts mean one red oak can feed the next. Removal plans often include disrupting grafts before or with takedown.
- Handle wood carefully.Extension guidance warns against moving infected firewood; tarping or proper disposal limits beetle access to spore mats.
- Price removal only after the risk is clear.Dead or dying oaks near targets are also a hazard question; see '''+a('hazard tree removal','/services/hazard-tree-removal')+''' and '''+a('dead tree removal','/services/dead-tree-removal')+'''.

HomeGuide figures are national, not Roanoke quotes. Large oaks near houses often need rigging or a crane. More in tree removal cost by size and remove or trim?.
Prevention that actually helps
Prune oaks in the dormant window Virginia guidance favors. Avoid wounding trunks with string trimmers and lawn equipment. Do not move firewood from wilted oaks into healthy oak neighborhoods. Diversify new plantings so one disease cannot clear a whole yard. ISA's Find an Arborist directory is one way to locate a credentialed arborist for sampling or a written risk plan.
Oak wilt versus other oak problems
Brown leaves in summer are not automatic proof of oak wilt. Drought, construction damage, borers and general oak decline can mimic pieces of the pattern. UW Extension and Minnesota Extension both stress accurate diagnosis before control work. Virginia DOF also publishes oak-decline materials that describe gradual decline from many stressors, which is a different story than a rapid red-oak wilt. If only one branch is off color after a dry spell, wait for a professional look before scheduling a full takedown.
Firewood, tarps and nearby healthy oaks
Minnesota Extension warns not to move logs or firewood from recently wilted oaks into healthy oak areas, and UW Extension says to burn, bury or tarp infected wood so beetles cannot reach spore mats. When a confirmed red oak comes down, ask the crew how wood will leave the site and whether root grafts to neighboring oaks need cutting as part of the plan. Skipping the graft step is how a single removal becomes a neighborhood line of wilt the next year.
Have an oak checked in the Roanoke Valley
Call (540) 904-1819 or use the form, and we will pass your request to an independent local crew. Tell us the oak type if you know it (red or white group), whether leaves wilted from the top, whether nearby oaks look healthy, and if storm wounds are fresh. For leaning or target risks, add arborist risk assessment.

Common questions
What is oak wilt?
Oak wilt is a lethal fungal disease caused by Bretziella fagacearum. UW Extension says it affects virtually all oaks, with red oaks most susceptible and white oaks usually less so.
How does oak wilt spread?
Insects carry spores to fresh wounds, and the fungus also moves through grafted roots between nearby oaks. UW and Minnesota Extension both describe those two paths.
When should I prune oak trees in Virginia?
Piedmont Master Gardeners, citing Virginia Cooperative Extension, recommend November and December, and avoiding routine pruning from March through August. Seal unavoidable growing-season wounds.
How fast does oak wilt kill a red oak?
UW Extension says oaks in the red oak group can die in less than one month. Minnesota Extension describes complete wilting and death in as little as four weeks from some branch infections.
Can white oaks get oak wilt?
Yes, but they usually decline more slowly. UW Extension says white oaks rarely die in a single season; Minnesota Extension cites multi-year timelines.
Should I remove a tree that might have oak wilt?
Get a diagnosis first. Extension sources say similar symptoms have other causes. Removal of confirmed infected red oaks, with attention to root grafts, is a common management step.
