Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Roanoke?
For trees on your private lot, generally no, unless the work is part of a development plan. Trees on city streets, rights-of-way and public grounds need a city permit under Code Section 33-2. Salem, Vinton, Roanoke County and Botetourt have their own codes.
How much does tree removal cost?
Published national ranges run from about $150–$450 for trees under 30 ft to $1,000–$2,000 or more for trees over 80 ft (Angi, 2026). Access, lines and slope change the price most. See the cost guide.
Tree service vs arborist: what's the difference?
Many tree services employ arborists. An ISA Certified Arborist has passed a certification exam in tree care; ask whether one will assess your tree.
When is the best time for tree work?
Late fall and winter for most planned pruning and removals. Avoid pruning oaks March through August because of oak wilt risk.
Will insurance pay for a fallen tree?
Often, when the tree hits an insured structure due to a covered peril. Removal coverage is commonly limited, often about $500–$1,000 according to the Insurance Information Institute.
