What drives the price

  • Height and spread. Taller trees need climbing or a bucket truck.
  • Access. Backyards behind houses and steep valley lots slow the crew.
  • Hazards. Lines, roofs and fences mean branches must be lowered, not dropped.
  • Condition. Long-neglected or storm-damaged trees take longer.
  • Cleanup. Ask whether chipping and hauling are included.

Timing for oaks

Virginia Cooperative Extension guidance, cited by Piedmont Master Gardeners, is to prune oaks in November or December where possible and avoid March through August because of oak wilt risk. Planning around that window can also mean easier scheduling.

Trimming near power lines

Appalachian Power trims along its pole-to-pole lines; the service drop to your house is the owner's responsibility. Never trim near energized lines yourself.

Save money

  • Trim several trees in one visit to spread the minimum fee.
  • Keep the wood as firewood or chips if you can use it.
  • Ask for structural pruning on young trees; it prevents costly work later.
