Roanoke Brush Pickup Rules for the City and the County

Roanoke brush pickup works differently in the city and the county: the City of Roanoke collects brush weekly on your trash day, while Roanoke County collects bulk and brush every other week.

Roanoke Tree Removal is a local referral service: we pass your request to an independent, local tree crew. We are not a government office; check the city or county page for your street before setting brush out.

The county's trash page and app tell you whether your street is an A or B week.

What neither will take

  • Brush cut by a contractor, tree company or utility. The city says to have the business remove it; the county excludes materials from paid contractors.
  • Stumps, and in the city, limbs 3 inches or thicker.
  • Dirt, rock, concrete and debris mixed into the brush.

Why a tree job needs its own haul-away

Because curbside service won't take contractor-cut brush, ask whether a quote includes chipping and hauling. See tree debris removal and the tree trimming cost guide.

Transfer station trips

Both the city and the county say each household gets 12 trips a year to the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority transfer stations for trash, bulk and brush.

After a storm

Storm debris can exceed the weekly limits. Check the city or county page for any special collection before piling large limbs at the curb, and keep piles clear of low wires.

Salem and Vinton

Salem and the Town of Vinton run their own collection. Check with them directly.
