Your options for the wood
- Haul it away. Priced mainly by how many truck trips it takes.
- Chip it on site. Brush goes through a chipper; you can keep the chips as mulch or have them removed.
- Cut and split for firewood. Logs are bucked to length and split, and you stack and season them.
- Leave logs in place on wooded lots, where that is acceptable and safe.
What it costs
Angi's data puts tree debris removal at $75 to $250 per dump trip, with a national average of $150 and most jobs between $75 and $500. Angi's trip table runs $150 to $500 for two trips, $225 to $750 for three and $300 to $1,000 for four. HomeGuide lists log splitting at $50 to $100 per hour and chipping at $100 to $150 per hour. These are national figures, not local quotes.
Bundle it with the tree work
Cleanup is usually cheapest when it is part of the original removal or trimming quote. Ask every estimator whether hauling, chipping and leaf raking are included, and whether logs stay or go. Angi's removal guide lists haul-away at about $70, chipping at about $95 and splitting at about $70 per tree when added to a removal.
After a storm
Photograph damage before cleanup if you may file a claim. The Insurance Information Institute says policies generally do not pay for debris removal unless the tree hit an insured structure, though some pay toward clearing a tree that blocks a driveway or ramp. Leave anything touching a line alone and report it to the utility. See fallen tree insurance claims in Virginia.
Keep the bill down
- Clear a path so the truck or chipper can get close.
- Keep brush and logs in separate piles.
- Decide in advance what wood you want to keep.
