Pine Tree Removal Cost

Three national cost guides land close together on pines: HomeGuide lists pine removal at about $250 to $1,600, Angi at about $250 to $1,500, and Fixr at about $200 to $1,500. Height moves the price more than species, and HomeGuide's national bands run from $200 to $500 for trees under 30 feet up to $1,200 to $2,500+ for trees over 80 feet. These are national figures, not Roanoke Valley bids. Here is how to read them for a white pine or Virginia pine in your yard.

The short version

  • National pine removal ranges: HomeGuide $250 to $1,600; Angi $250 to $1,500; Fixr $200 to $1,500.
  • Height, lean, and what sits under the tree drive the bid more than the species name.
  • Stump grinding is often extra: HomeGuide national about $120 to $400 for the first stump.
  • Beetle-killed pines rarely recover, and VCE says cut pine and tall stumps should be cleared promptly.

Cost by height

HomeGuide calls height one of the biggest cost factors because taller trees need more specialized equipment, extra safety measures, and an experienced crew. Its national bands are $200 to $500 under 30 feet, $500 to $1,500 for 30 to 60 feet, $850 to $2,000 for 60 to 80 feet, and $1,200 to $2,500+ over 80 feet. HomeGuide also notes that trunks over 24 inches across at chest height cost noticeably more. Fixr says trees over 80 feet may need a crane, depending on condition, trunk size, and what is nearby. For other species and sizes, see tree removal cost by size.

Pines you see around Roanoke

Virginia Tech's dendrology fact sheet describes eastern white pine as a large tree with a very straight trunk that often reaches well over 100 feet, which puts mature yard trees in the top price bands. Virginia pine is smaller, up to about 70 feet, and Virginia Tech notes it almost always carries dead, gray branch stubs along the trunk. Those stubs are normal for the species, but they can fall during removal and change how the crew rigs the job. Knowing which pine you have helps when you compare bids by phone.

Dead and beetle-killed pines

Virginia's Department of Forestry calls the southern pine beetle the most destructive native forest pest in the South and says it usually attacks stressed trees but can overcome healthy ones at high numbers. Virginia Cooperative Extension's bark beetle publication says trees almost never recover once infested with large numbers of bark beetles, and points to pitch tubes, reddish boring dust, and shot-hole exit marks as signs. Texas A&M Forest Service puts it simply: once all or most of a pine's foliage turns red or brown, the tree cannot recover. HomeGuide notes dead trees often cost more to remove because brittle wood is less predictable. More on that in dead tree removal cost.

Normal needle drop versus a dying pine

Not every yellow pine needs to come down. Virginia DOF's pine yellows note explains that each fall, pines shed their older interior needles, which turn yellow and drop while the needles at the branch tips stay green. A pine browning from the tips, fading over the whole crown, or showing pitch tubes on the trunk is a different story. Before you price a removal, read white pine turning brown and how to tell if a tree is dying.

Stump, brush, and wood

Many quotes leave the stump unless you ask. HomeGuide's national stump grinding guide lists about $120 to $400 for the first stump and $2 to $6 per inch of diameter. VCE's bark beetle guidance says recently cut trees, slash, and tall stumps should be cleared promptly so they do not draw egg-laying beetles, and that firewood with bark should not be moved long distances. Ask whether the price includes chipping brush, hauling logs, and grinding the stump. Related: stump grinding cost and Roanoke brush pickup.

Permits, power lines, and insurance

Angi's national calculator includes a permit line of about $60 to $150, but the need for one depends on where the tree stands. For local rules, see City of Roanoke tree removal rules and Roanoke County tree removal rules. A pine near lines needs the utility involved first; see tree removal near power lines. If a pine already fell on the house, read fallen tree insurance claims in Virginia.

Getting quotes you can compare

  1. Measure or estimate height.Count stories on the house or pace out the shadow. Height bands drive national pricing.
  2. Photograph the drop zone.Show what sits under the crown: roof, fence, driveway, wires.
  3. Note the condition.Brown crown, pitch tubes, dead top, or lean change how the crew rigs the job.
  4. List the extras.Stump grinding, log hauling, chip cleanup, and any permit.
  5. Ask for written scope. Two bids are only comparable if they include the same work.

Common questions

How much does it cost to remove a pine tree?

National guides put pine removal at about $250 to $1,600 (HomeGuide), $250 to $1,500 (Angi), and $200 to $1,500 (Fixr). Roanoke Valley bids depend on height, access, and what is under the tree.

How much does it cost to remove a large pine tree?

HomeGuide's national bands are $850 to $2,000 for 60 to 80 feet and $1,200 to $2,500+ over 80 feet. Fixr says trees over 80 feet may need a crane at about $1,500 to $2,500.

Is stump grinding included in pine removal?

Often not. HomeGuide's national stump grinding figure is about $120 to $400 for the first stump. Ask each crew whether the stump, logs, and brush are in the price.

Does a dead pine cost more to remove?

Often yes. HomeGuide says dead trees can cost more because brittle wood makes the job less predictable. Beetle-killed pines can drop tops and limbs.

Can a pine with bark beetles be saved?

Virginia Cooperative Extension says trees almost never recover once infested with large numbers of bark beetles. Texas A&M Forest Service says a pine with mostly red or brown needles cannot recover.

Why are my pine needles turning yellow in fall?

Virginia DOF says pines shed older interior needles each fall, which turn yellow and drop while branch tips stay green. That pattern is normal.
